The Student Success Assessment Toolkit is designed as a part of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)-Northern Illinois University (NIU) Libraries’ Academic Engagement Project. Funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a 2-year period, this research project investigates the effect of library services on the academic success of university students. The study is unique in that academic success is defined by the students themselves beyond standardized outcomes such as Grade Point Average (GPA). The toolkit offers assessment tools developed through this research, facilitating the measurement of students’ academic engagement and its influence on their personal definitions of academic success. Its resources are designed to empower other libraries in their efforts to support student success.

Assessment tools
The tool comprises two distinct sets of surveys: the Student Academic Engagement Survey (a one-time assessment), and the Online Weekly Journal (spanning eight weeks). These surveys are designed to explore undergraduate students’ academic experiences and their perceptions of their abilities and academic success.
For whom
The toolkit is designed for academic libraries seeking to enhance their assessment of library impact on student success. It is particularly valuable for libraries that lack the capacity or policies to implement learning analytics, as well as for those looking to supplement or replace their current use of learning analytics.
Student success
By utilizing these tools, libraries can better support and address students’ needs, fostering an environment that promotes academic success. This toolkit also enables libraries to clearly articulate their role in student success and identify specific activities that can be promoted to diverse groups of students to further support their academic achievements.
This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for
the years 2022 to 2024 under the National Leadership Grants program (LG-252338-OLS-22). All the resources shared on this website are publicly available. You are welcome to use these resources by acknowledging:
